Initial Evaluations
This visit is performed at the beginning of a new problem in order to establish baseline measurements/assessments. It is expected that this evaluation will take the longest due to the need for specific measurable parameters to be obtained. This can be thought of as the baseline to which progress evaluations can be compared.
Progress Evaluations

Progress evaluations are built into the Rehabilitation program. These are discussed following the Initial Visit and Evaluation. This is an assessment to determine if goals have been met.

Modalities

Modalities describe tools utilized by the trained rehabilitation practitioner to assist the patient in their healing.

Photobiomodulation (Laser)

Laser therapy is application of electromagnetic radiation in the form of light to induce a physiological response. Rehabilitation uses laser therapy to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling in order for the body to heal from injury or surgery. It is also helpful in the management of osteoarthritis.

Cryotherapy/Heat Therapy

Use of cold and heat may be incorporated into a patient’s rehabilitation treatment. Application would be determined on case by case basis and would take into account current patient status.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

This modality utilizes controlled, focused sound pulses to initiate healing. Sound energy generated using electrohydraulic (PulseVet) technology has many documented clinical benefits. Shock wave therapeutic results are achieved through multiple pathways, including: stimulation of blood vessels and molecular cellular signals, which are important in reducing pain and inflammation mediators. What is especially important is that the energy in the form of focused sound causes realignment of collagen fibers, countering scar formation. This helps to optimize tissue strength during healing. In addition, shock wave can be implemented to reduce inflammatory mediators, such as cases of osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)

NMES is delivery of electric current via electrodes placed on the skin to specific regions in order to address weakness, disuse atrophy, pain, swelling. This modality is useful especially with activating muscles in neurological cases and to promote tissue healing following injury or surgery.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

This healing modality utilizes a magnet to generate a low frequency, long wavelength electromagnetic field. The energy generated is unable to break molecular bonds, and is therefore non-damaging. The electromagnetic field generated can induce physiological changes to support bone and soft tissue healing, decrease pain, decrease inflammation.

Acupuncture

This is a treatment involving insertion of very small sterile needles into specific anatomical locations to elicit a physiological response. In some patients, an electric current can be applied to the needles to provide additional stimulation to the points. If there is a concern that needling will not be tolerated, acupuncture points can be simulated using pressure or laser (photobiomodulation) to elicit a physiological response. Acupuncture can be applied for many indications, including pain relief, enhancement of performance/endurance and as part of the treatment for neuromuscular re-education following neurological injury or surgery.

Therapeutic Exercises

These are specific prescribed activities performed in order to work towards defined goals. Therapeutic exercises are recommended based on current status, precautions, and functional goals/outcomes considered. These are taught using correct form in order to work towards the greatest benefit and prevent further injury.

Management of Post-Surgical Cases

Rehabilitation can support the healing process and optimize a patient’s status for the best possible outcome. Rehabilitation complements recommendations of your Primary Veterinarian and/or Surgeon.

More on Post Surgical Care

Once cleared for rehabilitation by the surgeon, we can begin the next phase of recovery. Orthopedic and/or Neurologic surgeries may involve the same technique for a specific procedure, but each patient is unique in how their body responds to surgery and how they heal. There are many factors considered by the Rehabilitation Professional when determining the next step for their journey through recovery and healing. Management of post-surgical cases takes into account details about baseline health status, details of the procedure and it combines information obtained from these with the findings from the Initial Evaluation in order to determine the plan. Timeline for rehabilitation is unique for each patient and can be discussed with Dr. Patnode during the Initial Evaluation.

Sports Injuries
If your athlete is not performing their sport(s) as expected, or if they appear lame/painful, an Initial Evaluation can be very helpful in identification of potential problems/injuries.
Sometimes, additional diagnostics are needed in order to determine if rehabilitation is the best next step, or if your athlete may require other interventions prior to rehabilitation. In some cases, rehabilitation is the next step and a plan will be determined at the time of the Initial Evaluation.
Mobility
Senior companions/athletes are one of the most important populations in Canine Rehabilitation Medicine. Many have already been prescribed multiple types of medications and supplements and may have seen results.
More on Mobility
  • Rehabilitation can be considered an additional “treatment” to help optimize a patient’s physical status.
  • Rehabilitation Professionals are trained in and will utilize different modalities (see descriptions of modalities offered), therapeutic exercises, and soft tissue techniques to help restore biomechanical stability.
  • Progress will be evaluated to determine when a patient is ready for changes to their Rehabilitation plan.
